January 17, 2009 - Approximately 1:00 p.m. :
Woven Stars at Christ the King Church, Gering NE

SUPPLY LIST:
  • Fabric A (background)1 1/3 yds
  • Fabric B (stars) 2 1/2 yds
  • Binding 1/3 yd
  • Border fabric 1/3 yd each of 2 fabrics
  • Fusible batting 10 X 50
  • Piece of flannel, felt or other sturdy fabric (towel?) at least 18 x 46. (Not part of the finished product.)
  • Your favorite tube turning tool. (Ex: Easy Loop Turner by Clover.)
  • Iron
  • Permanent and erasable marking pens
  • Ezy-Pull Bodkin by Dritz

Instructions: (To be done before class)
  • From Fabric A, cut four 3" strips crosswise (selvage to selvage)
  • From Fabric B, cut six 3" strips crosswise (selvage to selvage)
  • From Fabric A, cut twelve 3"x34" strips lengthwise (parellel to selvage)
  • From Fabric B, cut twenty-four 3"x34" strips lengthwise (parallel to selvage)

    1. Fold each strip of fabric in half lengthwise right sides together and sew into long tubes (use a scant 1/4" seam).
    2. Two pressing Options (Option B is faster).
  • Option A: With seam centered in the middle, press the seam of each strip open using an iron. Do not press the folded edges of the tube flat.
  • Option B: Purchase a dowel rod from local hardware or craft store that is 3/4" diameter and at least 42" long. Sand down one edge to a blunt point (an electric sander works best). Thread a tube onto the dowel and press the seam open using a steam iron.
    3. Turn all tubes right side out using your favorite turning procedure or using the Easy Loop Turner.
    4. Using a steam iron, press each tube so that the seam lies exactly on the edge of the tube. This hides the seam and allows the table runner to be reversible. Pressing on a mat with gridlines helps to ensure tubes are straight.
    5. Trim the 42" tubes to exactly the same length (there should be 10 of these).
    6. Cut the 34" tubes in half to make 72 17" tubes.

Boot Bag Full of Scraps at Prairie Winds Community Center, Bridgeport NE
Jan Sears says, I have totes full of scraps. My ideas for this class came when I wanted to use up a cowboy boot box full of Christmas fabric scraps. This class combines strip piecing, foundation piecing and crazy quilt techniques without the fancy stitches. We will try these techniques and I will show several ideas on what to do with them.

    SUPPLY LIST:
  • Basic sewing supplies
  • Basic rotary cutting supplies: cutter, mat, a 10" or 12" square, a 12-24" x 6" ruler
  • A small box or tote full of scraps, all colors, solids, prints, and don't forget a few neutrals. Possibly a focus/pictoral fabric, but DON'T BUY anything
  • 1 yard of muslin or light-colored, loosely woven cotton fabric (again, use what you already have). From this cut 1 or 2 10" or 12" square/s and 1 strip 6" x 22-24"
  • 3 or 4 sheets of paper (legal size) or newsprint paper or tissue paper
  • a pencil and eraser
  • Optional: A small iron and small ironing mat/towel

NOTE: If you have leftover strips, sew them together with 1/4" seam into a strip set approximately 24" long by whatever width you can make. Sew in random order as to color placement and vary the width placement. I do not recommend using strips that are over 2 1/2" wide. Don't worry about matching colors, etc.
